In 1972, construction began on a new theatre for the opera and symphony in Basel. When the new theatre was completed in 1975, they literally blew up the old one (which was built in the 1870s), but not before carefully disassembling and selling off the wonderful plush seats to patrons of the arts. Now, 43 years later, we are thrilled to have 9 seats from the front row available as one set.
As these were the best seats in the house they were designed to be assembled with a slight curve, though are currently set up in a straight line. Theoretically you could set them up in a partial row (or three rows of three), though bear in mind the chairs share an armrest, so split rows would mean the beginning and end chairs would only have one.
We are looking for a new owner who appreciates the history of these chairs - all the performances they have witnessed, the life they have lived. They are in good condition (minor wear, but nothing serious) and have many more years left in them.
Let us know if you'd like to arrange a viewing, and please pass on to friends and family who are theatre aficionados. They are being sold as a 9 piece set.
