Basic Skills for Furniture Renewing

An introductory course to learn the basics of updating or refinishing furniture pieces like chairs, side tables, shelves and other smaller items. Over four 2-hour sessions, participants will have the opportunity to select a chair, and refinish it under the supervision of the course leaders. The objective is to build basic skills on sanding, painting and simple modern upholstery techniques, as well as an understanding on where to source materials for future projects. A social atmosphere and light snacks will be provided at each session.

Language
The base language for the course will be German, however as the course will be led by an international team, those who are still learning German are welcome to join. Languages spoken by course leaders include German, Italian, English, French and Dutch.

Pre-requisites
None. This course is specially designed for beginners. The course for adults of any age, and any background.

Learning objectives
At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Sand wood and metal surfaces manually and with a machine
  • Paint wood and metal surfaces with a paintbrush, roller and spray can
  • Use basic upholstery to cover a chair seat with foam and fabric, using a staple gun
  • Understand how to evaluate the difficultly level and steps required for a furniture
  • project

Tuesday, September 15 th , 18.30 – 20.30 (sanding)
Tuesday September 22 nd , 18.30 – 20.30 (painting and upholstery)
Tuesday September 29 th , 18.30 – 20.30 (finishing up the project)

Costs
Th cost is CHF 199 including all materials (including a chair that the participants can take home) are included in the price.

COVID-19 Measures

The location has sufficient space to maintain social distance, and the number of participants will be capped.
Participants are advised to download the Swiss Tracing App.
Participants must use hand disinfectant before and after using any communal tools.
Participants will be provided with Personal Protective Equipment which won’t be shared (e.g. sanding mask, protective eyewear, gloves).
Participants should bring their own protective mask, and if a situation arises where social distancing can’t be observed (e.g. being shown how to use a tool) then the masks must be worn.
The latest advice from the Federal Office of Public Health will be followed and these
measures may be updated accordingly. If the FOPH introduces measures that prevent the course from being run (for example, banning small gatherings) then a full refund will be given.

About the course leaders
This course is being run as a collaboration between WERT!Stätte and ecochair.ch . Both organisations have common goals of using materials that would have otherwise been
wasted.

WERT!Stätte provides valuable volunteer work for people of all backgrounds, focusing of preventing food waste from fruit and vegetables as well as finding new uses for materialssuch as fabric, wood, furniture and other items that would otherwise end up as waste.

ecochair.ch is a platform promoting vintage, second-hand design and upcycled furniture, and offers a webshop, city tours, workshops, information and advice in Basel. It is an association that seeks to make it as simple as possible for people to buy high quality second-hand, or inspire them to repair or refinish their furniture, instead of buying new.
