A message from the founder
Creating an easy way to buy quality secondhand, design and vintage furniture is our mission. We believe that doing this is a simple way to minimise our collective impact on the environment. It’s good for you, and it’s good for the planet.
We want our homes to be our oasis, reflective of our personality and style. This is probably how you have found ecochair.ch, looking for a piece of furniture that you like. If we can do that for you, help you find that table or chair or desk that fits your style and needs, then we will have succeeded. ecochair is about getting people to forget that they are buying second-hand furniture, and instead focus on what they want and need in a product.
Welcome to our social enterprise we call 'ecochair', based in Basel, Switzerland.
As a social enterprise we have two goals: to achieve social, cultural, community economic and environmental outcomes; and, to earn revenue. For ecochair, this means making your experience of buying furniture hassle-free (making information available in English, online payments, and home delivery), and at the same time, making a positive impact on the environment by re-using.
I am personally motivated by reducing the environmental impact of my day to day life. I've spend most of my career working on responsible sourcing, that is, asking where the raw materials that are in our homes, food and clothes come from, and working to minimise the impact on the forests, ecosystems and people in producing countries. I've had the privilege of spending time in many important forests worldwide - the Ecuadorian Amazon, the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, the jungles of Vietnam, the remaining forest fragments in West Africa, the tropical rainforests of Sumatra and Kalimantan in Indonesia - not to mention the vast boreal forests of my home country, Canada. As a forester by training, I wholeheartedly support the use of renewable resources such as wood for furniture and homes, but we need to use this resource wisely, and for me this means valuing these products and maximising their useful life. Don't even get me started on the energy and pollution associated with non-renewables such as plastics, metals and glass.
Take a look at what we have to offer, and buy it because you want it, because you love it, because it's just so easy to click and get that table delivered so you don't have to eat with your plate in your lap anymore. And, you'll just happen to be helping the planet too.
